The process to enlist into the Army Reserve is the same as for the Regular Army, all standards are the same from nationality, medical and physical fitness.
4 MERCIAN recommend that the first part of looking to join is to visit your local unit, by doing this you will gain a better understanding of the Army Reserve, roles available and a chance for you to see if you feel you fit in. You can find your local Reserve units by adding your post code to the link here.
Once you have a local unit it is best to arrange a meeting by either completing the form here for 4 MERCIAN, or by email or telephone; this allows the unit to plan time for your visit.
Once you have visited then you need to start the application process by applying online, the web page to do this is here.
Once you have completed the initial application you will be allocated a Candidate Support Manager to help you though the process. You will be able to choose your unit, and you can follow your process through the online portal. A large part of the enlistment process is carried out online. How long the process takes is up to how long you take to provide information to enable you to progress.
Once you have been sponsored by a unit you can attend training nights as part of our support package, you will not be paid for your time at this stage, but we will reimburse your travel costs. Within 4 MERCIAN once you have past the initial medical (information is required from GP) you will be issued a set of uniform.
The next stage is to attend the Assessment Centre for 2 days, we will help you prepare for this but in outline this will include:
You can find out more about the assessment centre here.
If you decide to join as an officer, you will not need to go to the assessment centre but attend The Army Officer Selection Board. You can find out more about this at this link.
Once you have passed the assessment you are ready to enlist and start training. There a still a few background checks to be completed but these do not take long. On enlistment you will be issued all your uniform, equipment, be paid for all the time you commit and prepared to start your training.
