4 MERCIAN is the Reserve Battalion of The Mercian Regiment with over 400 soldiers from a wide variety of backgrounds. Our headquarters is in Wolverhampton with 10 location spread across the heart of England.
The battalion has 2 rifle companies, a support and a headquarters company, each comprising between 75 and 100 solders. These are male and female covering the traditional Infantry roles as well as chef, clerk, combat medical technician.
The Band of The Mercian Regiment are also Reserve soldiers and based in Wolverhampton.
You will need to be 18 to join 4 MERCIAN, but you can apply when you reach 17 and 9 months. The best way to join is to go to visit your local 4 MERCIAN unit and find out what is on offer and whether you like it. The team there will talk to you and give you an insight into being a Reserve solder with 4 MERCIAN.
We can help you with your application and getting ready for the Army Assessment Centre. You will need to start your application online. Maximum age is 43 in most cases.
You get paid a day rate according to your rank, starting from £40.13 in training and rising to £51.22 per day once you are a trained soldier. This includes being paid for weekly drill nights.
Plus, if you complete all of your annual training days and military tests you are entitled to a tax-free lump sum called a bounty once a year.
We also cover your travel costs; you will earn an Army’s pension and earn a day’s paid holiday for every 10 days that you spend training.
Being a Reservist isn’t just about soldiering; you will also have opportunities to travel, earn military and civilian qualifications which will help you gain more experience and promote through the ranks.
Serving will also offer you something different outside of a normal 9 - 5 job including excitement, adventure and the chance to protect the nation.
After a period of time as a Reservist, if you have the aptitude, you can attempt selection for the Special Forces or spend an extended period with one of our Regular battalions on overseas operations.
4 MERCIAN train once a week on a Tuesday evening from 1930 to 2130 hours, and often invite interested people to join us for a couple of weeks to see if they would like to join.
We have around 10 weekend training events per year, you would not be expected to attend all, but the more you train the better you learn. How much time you spend is really up to you - training is flexible and can fit around your life, family and work.
The minimum we would ask you to aim for 27 days a year - and your weekly training session at 4 MERCIAN will count towards this. Many 4 MERCIAN soldiers do a lot more, your only limitation is what you feel you can commit.
