Lance Corporal Alan Cochran - 4 June 2010

1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment  


It was during a foot patrol aimed at dominating the ground around a known enemy movement corridor that Lance Corporal Cochran was killed in action during an exchange of fire with insurgent forces.

Private Jonathan Michael Monk - 9 June 2010

2nd Battalion The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, attached to 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment


Private Monk was caught in an explosion during a foot patrol to clear an area of improvised explosive devices to increase freedom of movement for the locals.

Pte Thomas Sephton - 5 July 2010

1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment 


On the morning of the Sunday 4 July 2010, operating in a Rifle Platoon, Pte Sephton deployed from Patrol Base Malvern tasked with providing flank protection to an IED clearance operation. Whilst clearing a route for his section he was caught in an IED blast and seriously wounded. Pte Sephton was extracted by helicopter to Bastion Role 3 Hospital and then flown to the UK. On the afternoon of the 5 July 2010, with his family present, the decision was taken to switch off his life support machine and he died of his wounds.

Lieutenant John Charles Sanderson - 11 August 2010

1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment


Lt Sanderson was wounded in an explosion whilst on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province on 13 July 2010.


He was treated at the scene before being flown to the UK for further treatment. On Wednesday 11 August 2010, surrounded by his family, he finally succumbed to his injuries.

Corporal Terry Webster - 4 June 2010

1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment

  

It was during a foot patrol aimed at dominating the ground around a known enemy movement corridor that Corporal Webster was injured, sustaining a gunshot wound. Despite immediate first aid, he later died of his injuries in the medical facility at Kandahar.

Lance Corporal Andrew Breeze - 12 June 2010

1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment


During an operation to clear an area near to Check Point Kingshill in order to increase security, Lance Corporal Breeze was caught in an explosion and was killed in action. 

Colour Sergeant Martyn Horton - 23 June 2010

1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment 


On 23 June 2010, following an incident at a Police Check Point near Gereshk, Colour Sergeant Martyn Horton’s team, along with the Afghan National Police, deployed as a Quick Reaction Force in support of their Afghan colleagues.


The vehicle in which he was travelling overturned into the Nahr-e-Bughra Canal. At approximately 2208hrs local, Colour Sergeant Horton died in the incident alongside three of his colleagues from the Police Advisory Team - Lance Corporal David Ramsden, Private Alex Isaac and Private Douglas Halliday.

Private Douglas Halliday - 23 June 2010

On 23 June 2010, following an incident at a Police Check Point near Gereshk, Private Halliday’s team, along with the Afghan National Police, deployed as a Quick Reaction Force in support of their Afghan colleagues.


The vehicle in which he was travelling overturned into the Nahr-e-Bughra Canal. At approximately 2208hrs local, Private Halliday died in the incident alongside three of his colleagues from the Police Advisory Team

Private Gareth Bellingham - 18 June 2011

3rd Battalion The Mercian Regiment


Private Gareth Bellingham deployed to Afghanistan in April 2011 as part of Combined Force Nahr-e Saraj (North), commanded by the Danish Battle Group.


On the morning of 18 June 2011, Private Bellingham deployed with C Company, Tactical Headquarters, and Number 3 Tolay (Afghan National Army) to an area near Khar Nikar in the Upper Gereshk Valley, Helmand province.


The Company Group was conducting a patrol to assess the situation on the ground and meet with the local population who had recently returned to compounds in the area.


During the patrol, a local Afghan was injured by an improvised explosive device. As C Company were providing security, insurgents fired upon the patrol and Private Bellingham was fatally wounded. 

Private Matthew Haseldin - 3 November 2011

2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment


Private Haseldin was killed in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, while on an operation to maintain freedom of movement for the local population. His patrol came under attack from insurgents and sadly, during the attack, he sustained a fatal gunshot wound. 

Captain Rupert William Michael Bowers - 21 March 2012

2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment 


Captain Bowers, from 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment (2 MERCIAN), was attached to 2nd Battalion The Rifles, operating as an advisor to the Afghan National Army.


Captain Bowers commanded a small team responsible for the training and development of the Afghan National Army based in Forward Operating Base Ouellette, in the Mirmandab region of Nahr-e Saraj district in Helmand province.


On 21 March 2012, Captain Bowers was leading a patrol to clear a position of the threat of insurgents when he was killed in the blast from an improvised explosive device.

Lance Corporal Jamie Webb - 25 March 2013

1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment


Lance Corporal Webb died as a result of wounds sustained during an insurgent attack on his patrol base in the Nad ‘Ali district of Helmand province on 25 March 2013.

WO2 Ian Fisher - 5 November 2013

3rd Battalion The Mercian Regiment


Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) Fisher deployed to Afghanistan on 19 August 2013 as the Warrior fighting vehicle Sergeant Major for the Task Force Helmand Armoured Infantry Company of A Company, 3rd Battalion The Mercian Regiment. His unit was part of the Manoeuvre Battle Group of 7th Armoured Brigade, based at Patrol Base in Lashkar Gah. 


On Monday 4 November, WO2 Fisher deployed with his company on a 2 day operation to disrupt insurgent activity in the vicinity of Kamparak to the north east of his patrol base. The following day, as a meeting was being conducted with Afghan National Security Forces, WO2 Fisher’s vehicle was subjected to a vehicle borne suicide attack. WO2 Fisher was evacuated by air to the military hospital at Camp Bastion, where it was confirmed that he had been killed in action.
